EatDrinkLA Does Delivery

A new baby at home might mean never leaving the house, but that’s no excuse to not enjoy fantastic food while you’re trapped inside.

Here’s a look at just a few of the dozens of food delivery services available in the Los Angeles area–and i’m not talking about take-out.

Freshly

A perfectly portioned, doctor approved meal that requires no cooking and only 2 minutes in the microwave. Basically a freshly made TV dinner.

Pro’s: Only takes 2 minutes to have a hot and savory meal, and the cost is low–$10 or less.

Con’s: The food can get a little monotonous and the side dishes are limited. You basically need to love cauliflower and zucchini or you’re out of luck. But you have to remember this is technically diet food, so close your eyes and pretend you’re having real mashed potatoes and spaghetti.

Open Taste

Open Taste is one of the newest ways to order groceries at home, but unlike placing an order at your local Vons, everything offered here is from local organic farms and still costs 35% less than what you are used to paying!

Pro’s: Free next day shipping, a visually stimulating and easy to use online marketplace, and organic farm boxes for less than $20.

Con’s: Substitutions! I was a little disappointed when I ordered some long carrots with tops ala bugs bunny style based on the photo, but instead was given a bag of small peeled ones!

Gobble

Promises gourmet meals like seafood arrabbiata with squid ink spaghetti and pan seared chicken with truffle potatoes that you prepare yourself in only 10 minutes.

Pro’s: Takes the guess work out of cooking with pre-packaged ingredients you don’t have to measure and idiot proof instructions on index cards with pretty pictures. Also the price is pretty reasonable, about $12 a person.

Con’s: You have to cook AND pay attention (so no walking away to blog half way through). Also the 10 minute meal must only be for the advanced cook. If your skills lie in ordering food versus preparing it, then you are looking at closer to 20. Lastly remember, not all ovens are created equal, so be sure to mind the time even with their recommendations.

Case in point, I burned the free gift cookies as a result of not paying attention to the oven…:(

But there was a success story as well 🙂

Munchery

Another new kid on the block, Munchery offers wholesome dinners for busy families and hard working professionals at an affordable price (entrées start at $7.95). Plus they donate meals to local charities such as the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and Upward Bound House with every order purchased.

One of the new menu favorites, “Your Favorite Burger,” ($10.95) can be made any way you’d like (40 different options) and is cooked sous-vide style which allows the patty to retain all its juices and still taste fresh after reheating in the microwave.

Your Favorite Burger

Pro’s: Delivery available on-demand and the menu options are created by more than one chef, so you’ll never get bored.

Con’s: Not available in all parts of LA County yet, including mine 🙁

Freshology

The new mom’s program from Freshology is designed especially for new moms and babies with special nutrients and customizable proteins depending on if you are still pregnant or are a nursing mom.

Pro’s: Perfect amount of calories and you can customize it based on food allergies.

Con’s: The price–starting at $59.95 a day. Also it does not appear to be available a la carte so you are locked into a full day of meals, albeit delicious ones 🙂
