LA Times Food Bowl 2020

I attended the preview event for the LA Times Food Bowl 2020 back in February of this year and spent time shoulder to shoulder with a large crowd at the Firehouse Hotel with a fresh Bon Temps Everything Croissant in hand. Fast forward to our post-coronavirus world and not only has Bon Temps shuttered but we can no longer rub shoulders with anyone!

So what can be we expected from a large city-wide food festival? An extra large positive pivot!

Food Bowl: Takeout and Give Back

The fourth annual LA Times Food Bowl, originally scheduled for the month of May, will now take place on October 17th. It will also be completely online.

There will be an interactive dinner party with food from The Los Angeles Times Restaurant of the Year honoree Orsa and Winston; charity food drives with the Takeout and Give Back campaign; and a Cook-a-thon Livestream featuring 30 different chefs! Registration for the FREE live cook-a-thon is open at lafoodbowl.com

Takeout and Give Back Restaurant Guide

As part of the Takeout and Give Back Campaign, The LA Times Food staff will be sharing a takeout guide with special menus. If you’re a Citi cardmember you are also eligible for 6-months of the L.A. Times with your takeout purchase.

Those Golden Winners

The winners of the highly coveted Restaurant of the Year and Gold Award are two restaurants that epitomize what the LA Times Food Bowl 2020 is all about. Yes, they both serve amazing food in stellar restaurant spaces; but more than that they can unite a city when it needs it most.

The winner of Restaurant of the Year is Chef Josef Centeno of Orsa & Winston in Downtown Los Angeles. Within a matter of weeks, he went from serving tasting menus to serving hospital workers. He even opened a takeout window and adjusted his menu so he could serve more people.

This year’s Gold Award went to Post & Beam in Crenshaw. They have been monumental in advancing the spread of great restaurants to areas of Los Angeles that have mostly been overlooked. Founding Chef Govind Armstrong and owner Brad Johnson have since passed the torch to Chef John Cleveland, but all three are honored with this award.

Why you should participate

There’s no excuse this year for not checking out the LA Times Food Bowl! Events are FREE and you can enjoy a new takeout guide! After months of isolation, a change of menu options and a digital Chef in your kitchen is what we need.
